In Fall 2019, Rhodes State College created The SHOP after reviewing studies with alarming results. Nearly 86,000 responded to a study done by The Hope Center which recently found that 48% of community college students have some form of food insecurity. A survey sent to Rhodes State College students found that 39% of our respondents went without a nutritious meal at least once per month. This dire situation can impact a student’s ability to focus on their studies. Therefore, The SHOP was established on August 27, 2019.

The SHOP is located in the Public Service Building, Suite 148, and is open 8am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Through its partnership with the Rhodes Foundation, the generosity of our students and employees, and the community, Rhodes provides each interested student with the supplies they need when they need them.

In Fall 2022, The SHOP opened a second location at the Borra Center on the 2nd floor in 205B.  The hours vary each semester and are updated via campus email.

Several times a year, the Office of Student Engagement, the Food Pantry Committee, and several student organizations conduct food drives and other campaigns to replenish the pantry, bringing awareness to food insecurity on campus and encourage volunteerism. Faculty, staff and student volunteers operate The SHOP. If you’re interested in volunteering, please email TheShop@RhodesState.edu. A brief training session and confidentiality waiver must be completed prior to volunteering at The SHOP.
