Rhodes State College Approved as a Registered Apprenticeship Sponsor

LIMA, OH (March 21, 2017) - Rhodes State College was recently the first Ohio community college to be approved by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Service’s Ohio State Apprenticeship Council as a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Registered Apprenticeship Sponsor. Registered apprenticeship programs combine job-related classroom instruction with structured on-the-job training so individuals can prepare for careers in high-demand occupations.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, as a result of a DOL grant, offers funding to offset tuition costs for students participating in apprenticeship programs sponsored by community colleges. Apprenticeship programs provide the opportunity for workers to fill high-skilled, high-paying job openings and for employers seeking to build a qualified workforce.

“This designation demonstrates the Rhodes State College commitment and ability to work with private business and industry so students have the skills and abilities employers need to be successful,” said Kent Kahn, Executive Director of Workforce Economic Development and Continuing Education at RSC. “To be designated a Registered Apprenticeship Sponsor by the Department of Labor is a credit to the leadership, faculty and staff at Rhodes State.” The grant funding will support new apprenticeship programs in manufacturing, along with new sectors such as healthcare and informational technology.

Ohio has more than 900 Registered Apprenticeship programs in fields such as construction, energy, healthcare, manufacturing and utilities. Apprentices earn while they learn and, when they graduate, they earn an average of $60,000 a year without incurring college debt.
