Becoming a Tutor

The Academic Success Center offers a student position: Peer Tutor; students must have completed a FAFSA through the Financial Aid office (PS 150), and registered with College Central Network through the Career Services Office (PS 150). Instructions can be found below.

Become a Peer Tutor

The goal of the peer tutor is to encourage students to develop skills, strategies, and attitudes necessary to reach their academic goals. Peer tutors work with individuals or small groups in the Academic Success Center on an appointment and walk-in basis. Peer tutors are also responsible for visiting courses each semester to give tutoring information to students and working with instructors to maintain current knowledge about the course and subject.

Peer tutors must complete a training program within their first semester of working in the Center, including an orientation session, two in-person training sessions, and two individual assignments.  

Requirements:

  • Grade of A or B in the course(s) you wish to tutor (course must have been taken within the past two years)
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester (or 3 credit hours during Summer term)
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation (faculty)
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Successful completion of CPT 1040 or higher
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and basic computer applications

Become a Professional Tutor

The goal of the peer tutor is to encourage students to develop skills, strategies, and attitudes necessary to reach their academic goals.

Requirements:

  • MA or MS in subject area, education or related area and/or; 
  • Teaching experience or Professional Certification in subject area.
