Resume Basics

Before you start…

  1. Read through all the samples in this handbook.  Note the variety of headings and how other students presented their info.
  2. Make a list of the “headings” that apply to you and your resume.
  3. Now make quick notes on what items you think should be listed in each of those headings.
  4. Head for the PC, it is time to create the first draft of your resume (yes, it’s true - there will be several drafts!)

Here are the items that MUST be included on your resume:

Demographics - name, address, phone, email (only if you check it daily)

Academic Preparation - name of college, name of major(s), graduation date (include graduation date as month and year if you are within a school year of graduating; if you are seeking summer or part-time employment in your first year of college, then it’s okay to say “anticipated June 20--”)

Internships, practicum, clinical experiences, Capstone courses or class projects that demonstrate an application of your knowledge and skills

Special training relating to your major/degree/job objective

Special Skills/Computer Experience - special skills that relate to your objective or that make you unique from other similar majors (e.g.: fluent in Spanish)

Employment History - usually is a must, but if you have a number of clinical or related experience entries, employment history not related to your major may not get included. This is an important item to discuss with your Placement Director.

References - only if you are creating a reference file in the Office of Career Services; otherwise, you do not need to say “available upon request”. If you are a job seeker, everyone knows you will have to make them available if called upon to do so.
