Converting to the New Rhodes-ID Number
Effective August 1, 2006, Rhodes State College will no longer use Social Security Numbers (SSNs) as a primary way to identify College constituents; instead, a unique identification number—the Rhodes-ID number—will be assigned to all Rhodes State constituents including students, faculty and staff. The Rhodes-ID number, assigned at the beginning of an individual’s association with the College, will be used across all systems, applications and many business processes throughout the lifetime of an individual’s association with the College. This step is critical in the continuing efforts to reduce the risk of identity theft for the campus community.
Rhodes State will continue to collect and use SSNs where legally required and in accordance with the Federal Privacy Act of 1974 and associated amendments, where disclosure of the use of the SSN when collected is an important aspect of the Act. However, SSNs will no longer be used as the key identifier in our automated systems.
Why, What, and How:
- Why are we converting to a new Rhodes-ID number?
- With the Social Security Number (SSN) accessible to so many people, it is possible for someone to fraudulently use an individual’s SSN to assume another identify and gain access to financial and other personal information, risking an individual’s personal credit and confidentiality. Federal Privacy Act compliance serves as a deterrent to identity theft and its consequences. It is the intent of the College to take the necessary precautions to protect the identity of all of its constituents.
- What is the format of the new Rhodes-ID number?
- The new ID number is a 9-digit number beginning with "R" to distinguish it from Social Security Numbers.
