The Accounting Major is designed to prepare students for gainful employment in business and industrial accounting positions in three main areas: private organizations, governmental agencies and public accounting firms. The aim of the program is to educate the student in the design, maintenance and utilization of a financial system. Emphasis on accounting systems and analysis of financial data from the managerial point of view constitutes a valuable part of the curriculum. In addition, much emphasis is placed on solving and setting up accounting problems utilizing popular computer software. Students will utilize an integrated accounting software program which simulates various business operations and employ tax software while preparing returns. Students completing work in the Accounting Program are granted an Associate Degree in Accounting.

In addition, the degree complies with the educational requirements leading to the Certified Public Accountant certificate. Additional information regarding the CPA exam may be obtained from the program chair.

The Accounting and Finance program exists to engage students in meaningful student development and learning opportunities by ensuring access to the learning process in a variety of mediums that provide the student with the technical knowledge and general education skills necessary for a position in their career field as well as to instill the desire to seek out opportunities for life-long learning.

Employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through the year 2016. In addition to openings resulting from growth, the need to replace accountants and auditors who retire or transfer to other occupations will produce numerous job openings annually in this large occupation.

The changing role of accountants and auditors also will spur job growth. In response to market demand, these financial specialists will offer more financial management and consulting services as they take on a greater advisory role and develop more sophisticated and flexible accounting systems. By focusing on analyzing operations, rather than simply providing financial data, accountants will help to boost demand for their services. Also, internal auditors will increasingly be needed to discover and eliminate waste and fraud.

Rhodes State College 2009 Graduate Status Report

Students are encouraged to meet each term with their assigned academic advisor, faculty advisor or program chair to ensure appropriate sequencing of course work, planning for full-time or part-time course work, transferring to a four-year institution, or to address other educational questions. Each student must complete his/her degree with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 to be eligible for the Associate of Applied Business Degree. Please see individual program requirements for additional “C” grade policies.
