Compass Testing

The COMPASS is a computerized testing program from ACT that includes assessments in five areas including Reading, Math, Writing Skills, English as a Second Language, and the e-Write (writing an essay). The college staff will help you to identify which tests you will be required to complete.

Rhodes State College uses the COMPASS program to:

  1. Gather information about your skills in several different areas;
  2. Alert you to resources available to you at the College;
  3. Connect you to courses where your skills match up with the course prerequisites; and
  4. Assist in increasing your opportunity for success in the courses you select

The COMPASS tests are designed to evaluate your skill levels and place you into the most appropriate courses to help you achieve your academic goals. As you prepare to take the COMPASS placement test, the following preparation steps and strategies are recommended:

  1. Before taking the COMPASS test:
    • Review the sample COMPASS test questions found at http://www.act.org/compass/sample to become familiar with the types of questions and topics that will be covered.
    • Call the Testing Center (419-995-9476) to schedule an appointment.
    • COMPASS testing is untimed, so you may work at your own speed (as a general guide, testing appointments are made in 1.5-hour blocks).
    • Students must bring a photo identification in order to use Testing Center services.
    • Get sufficient rest the night before you take the test.
    • Allow sufficient time getting to the testing room ahead of time, so you do not feel rushed.
    • During testing:
      • Read the directions for each test carefully.
      • Read each question carefully.
      • Raise your hand to get the attention of the proctor if you do not understand any of the directions.
      • Relax and do your best.
      • After you have completed COMPASS:
        • Review your COMPASS Student Advising Report and the messages it contains regarding what to do next to succeed at Rhodes State College.
        • Talk to your Rhodes State College advisor about your results and any questions you may have about your courses, program of study, and/or areas where you feel you may need help.
